Sir Thomas Picton
Carmarthenshire has its unique character. But our landscapes and towns hold clues that connect us to the rest of the world. Many connections are not obvious. Many hide uncomfortable truths.
Sir Thomas Picton is the obvious starting point, but we are also deeply aware that Carmarthenshire’s association with slavery runs deeper. Its legacy runs through the county’s industrial heritage, the cottage woollen industry, the politically influential families, and even the wealthy benefactors who did so much good but with ‘bad’ money.
Carmarthenshire County Council is committed to promoting equality and diversity. The museums are part of this change. They hold items linked to slavery, colonialism and other abuses of power. But these links are not always recognised or understood fully.
A process of reinterpretation that acknowledges past wrongs has begun. But this is only the first step on a journey to create museums that are more welcoming, for everybody who visits and for everybody who works in and with them.
